12/23/93 The Long Awaited D/GENERATION Installation Crack 12/23/93
Ľ

At last, the long awaited D/GENERATION installation crack, designed solely
for cracking the version 1.00 release of INSTALL.EXE.
Packaged with this archive is the copy-lefted utility DISLITE. Use
DISLITE at your own discretion, reading the DISLITE instructions prior to
using the following crack.

As stated before, this crack was created only for use with version 1.00 of
the D/GENERATION program. Also bear in mind that the following crack is my
first IBM (or compatible) crack and hopefully not my last. It took a small
amount of time to interpret the 80x86 machine language (at 50Mhz) after using
the small 65C02A instruction set (at 1Mhz) for many years. Know of any good
reference materials concerning 80x86 machine language? PLEASE, let me know.
Many of the 80x86 instructions are confusing to my small (Apple //e) mind.

Procedure for cracking the D/GENERATION installation utility (INSTALL.EXE)
Ķ
IMPORTANT: I am not liable for any damage that may occur to your soft-
ware, hardware, or anything that you own because you used
the following crack! USE THIS AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION.

Ķ
 0. (Beginners only)
Create a temporary directory on your hard drive, change to that
directory, and copy the program INSTALL.EXE from you install disc
to your hard drive. Now, dig up your favorite editor and start
hacking with step #1. Be sure that DISLITE is in your PATH or that
DISLITE is in this temporary directory.
Ķ
 1. Dig out the DISLITE file and type:

     DISLITE INSTALL.EXE

DISLITE should expand the installation utility from roughly 38k to
     around 71k.
Ķ
 2. Initiate your favorite editor and choose one of three options:

     a) Scan for a hex byte signature
     b) Jump to some offset location
     c) A combination of a) and b)

    * I prefer to use GEDIT.EXE, a small executable packaged with Gazelle's
      Q-DOS 3.0
Ķ
 3. Search patterns and offsets:

 ķ
Offset(HEX) Search Pattern (HEX) Replacement Signature (HEX)

 Ķ
  0000:1488 75 E3 E8 97 2D A3 A8 replace 75 E3 with 90 90
 Ķ
  0000:7D34 55 8B EC 1E 07 8A 66 replace 55 with 33
 Ľ

Simply replace the search pattern bytes with the replacement signature
listed to the right of the search pattern. The other option is to
jump to the offset location and enter the replacement signature.
Ķ
 4. Save your version and make a backup copy of the D/GENERATION install
disk. Rename or replace the file INSTALL.EXE program on the duplicate
disk with your newly modified executable. The D/GENERATION install
program will not even seek the floppy drives or request the original
     installation diskette. Enjoy!
