in particular. Since Tandy is supposed to be the biggest supplier of
Xenix-based systems, I thought I'd poke around here. But I'm finding very few
messages about T6000's, almost none since 1987.

What's happening? Is the T6000 dead or dying? Is there little interest in
Xenix in this group? Am I missing something obvious? Thanks for any comments

Yes, it would be possible to keep "recent" uploads in a special directory _ but
_ how long is long enough to keep them there? It could also be confusing to
members who download the first file in a group of 2, and then when they come
back for the second - it is gone (moved to the correct Topic).

The other problem is that, we must be sure the no one is in the process of
downloading when we execute the move.

The idea is appealing, though - let me see if we can work something out.

You are correct about there being few messages about the T6000. You are also
correct about there being little said about Xenix/Unix. This will change, as
Xenix is finally being recongnized for the fine shell that it is; and it
superior functionality (oppsed to MS-DOS).

You have to remember that Microsoft has had a very strong hold on the PC
operating shell. With the coming of the 386/486, Xenix is finding its way into a
once mono-market. I mean, why have 386 and limit it with MS-DOS <grin>.

I forsee SCO Xenix running on my system in the next few weeks - hope you stick

     VDISK & COMMAND.COM
     From: DOUGFOGG To: KENTSMITH (NR)

Both John Harrell (DOSWIZZ) and I answered a question you posed here a while
back about putting COMMAND.COM on a VDISK. Both answers were reprinted in the
June PCM. John said it didn't work; I said it did. One of us is wrong. It's
me.
MS-DOS 2.11 pays no attention at all to the COMSPEC parameter when it must
reload the transient part of COMMAND.COM after an application terminates. Any
program which wipes out the transient part up in high memory will force DOS to
reload COMMAND.COM from whence it first came (your boot drive) when it finishes.
DOS 2.11 itself is too stupid to look at COMSPEC. Later versions of DOS, which
are unavailable for the T2K, are a little smarter.
But both John and I agree that smart programs which look for the COMSPEC
parameter in the environment before shelling out to DOS or another program (such
as his excellent MENU program) will work much faster if COMMAND.COM is on a
VDISK and COMSPEC has been SET to point to it. So, by all means, put
COMMAND.COM on your T2K's VDISK and SET COMSPEC as I described. It won't hurt,
but it also won't help as often as I may have led you to believe.

     changing the t2000 hard disk
     From: JOHNMYSELF To: ALL

Well, I am pleased to report that the seagate drive works well. Unfortunately
the first one crashed (yup) after only 6 days and I figured out why.

The original tandon tm502 that comes in the 2000 was a mounting bracket which
supports the unit in the machine which has 4 rubber grommets which double as
shock absorbers to reduce vibration in operation. There is also plenty of free
space near where the mounting screws go in so there is no problem.

Unfortunately, I didn't realize this on the initial installation which proved to
be a rather tight fit with the mounting screws snug against the power supply on
one side, and the floppy drive cage on the other.

Here's how to prevent that problem (which I did with the new unit). Before
mounting the seagate drive on the bracket (after taking it off the original
drive of course), take each screw and put it in a bolt cutter. Hand set it up
to the unthreaded portion and cut the end off the bolt. then back the bolt off
the cutter. That should reduce the length just enough so that a) the screws
don't rest hard against the drive housing while b) causing a snug fit in the
box.

The drive will also run quieter (especial when parking the heads at power down)
and as a result of this proper instalation, should last a long time.

A little wordy (sorry abt that) but I thought I'ld pass it on so someone else
didn't make the same mistake I did. (at least it was in warranty)

It is very convenient to say the least. Of course it's slow compared to
my TX (80286) with a reasonably fast (40 ms) hard drive. But I can't just pick
up my TX and take it with me either!
I have it set up with a 128k ram disk in the extra memory into which I
put often needed files like CHKDSK, certain batch files, LIST, and files for a
menu system. I have the menu system installed so that it just calls the correct
batch file (in drive c ) and prompts me to put in the correct floppy disks.
Just so no one gets confused, the menu system is shareware and does not
come with the 1400 LT.

All and all for $895 I'd go for it!

I used Take Charge! to test some floppies that had previously tested out
ok with CHKDSK, i.e. no bad sectors. Lo and behold Take Charge! found bad
sectors in some of them. Now what is interesting here is that some of those
diskettes were ones I was indeed starting to have trouble accessing!
The point being: don't trust CHKDSK to flag bad sectors or it'll be to
late. Use a utility of some sort instead. Before you use a diskette, first
format it and then check for bad sectors.
It's true that both FORMAT.COM and CHKDSK.COM should catch and flag any
bad sectors but they don't really seem to do the job. (for me anyway)

If you have trouble accessing a diskette, put a different diskette in
the same drive and try accessing it. If you can, then the diskette is bad. If
you can't then try a couple more diskettes. If you can't access any of them
reliably then your drive is the problem and not the diskettes.

You can use any mfm drive such as the seagate st251 40meg drive. The
restriction is that it not be one of the rll drives which require a higher
speed. If you do go for a 40meg or higher drive you would be best to contact
Envision Designs or Bob Spencer in the Eastern U.S. to get his mod which allows
us to run a drive over 32meg. It will be formatted as drive C and E. Miniscribe
also makes the appropriate drives but just do not buy the 30meg drive as this is
a 20meg which is a forced 30meg. we cannot use it. Good Luck Cameron Atkison

set of pins is: you MUST have a twisted 34 pin cable. That would explain
DS2 instead of 1. Is your cable twisted or, ( make me a fool ) -
is it straight?

RE: Call Waiting (Re: Msg 14527)
     From: RLYOUNG To: RVCUSER

Re call waiting: the *70 trick will work perfectly, as long as your local
switching center is up to date (which is most likely, since they offer call
waiting). It will suspend call waiting for the duration of ALL ONLY. After
you hang up, call waiting is restored. The easiest route is to add *70 to each
number in your dialer, or use one of Procomm's long distance codes to hold
it... Or: if you have a Hayes-compatible modem, you can change the "Lost
Carrier to Hang Up Delay" setting, S10. This delay permits the carrier from
the other end to dissappear for the selected time without your modem
disconnecting. The setting value is in tenths of seconds, i.e. S10=20 will
allow a two-second lapse. A setting of 255 will cause your modem to ignore
carrier detect completely (probably unadvisable, as you will automatically get
a CONNECT message if anything answers, like an answering machine, small child,
etc....). A related register is S9, "Carrier Detect Response Time", which
determines the length of time carrier must be present for your modem to
recognize it. S9 MUST BE LESS THAN S10!!! You can add the S10=30 (for example)
to your modem initialization string in Procomm (unless you have a SmartModem
2400 or clone with non-volatile memory, where it can be permanently set). This
MIGHT allow your modem to
"ride out" the call waiting signal, but garbage from the Click will probably
mess up your screen or interfere with a download...

Does anyone know whether a better joystick is available with a Tandy 1000

The only non-Tandy unit I've spotted in the stores to date is one by Gravis, but
this is a fancy

generally don't list any joysticks. Any guidance appreciated.

I'm sorry George. I tend to take things for granted after a while. You
will need to go the the Utilities Topic of the Database. Once there,
type SEARCH and press Return. When asked for a name or keyword, type
PKZIP FILE. It will give you a message that "1 item found". Type READ.
It will give you a description and present you with download options.
You'll need to have XMODEM, at least in your communications package.
Once you're sure you have Xmodem, type XD and hit ENTER. When you see the
message telling you to start your download, begin you Comm. packages
XMODEM Download proceedure.

Most of the files here are in Compressed form to make them smaller and less
costly to download. Once you have PKZIP, you can decompress the ZIP files
you download. I also recommend getting PKUNPAK. This we decompress
ARC files.

For more info on DLing and ARCing and such, go to the General Topic of
the Database and do a SEARCH for HELP, ARC, DOWNLOAD. They are pretty
good at filling you in on the basics.

     VGA board in Tandy 1000TL

  I have a Tandy 1000TL . . .

that I cannot get Windows 286 (Version 2.1) to SEE that I have a VGA card and
neither will Word Perfect. Windows locks up on the opening screen, while Word
Perfect works but will not use VGA graphics.

I have heard talk about having to somehow disable the Tandy graphics on a TX,
and perhaps on my TL as well, but the manual with the VGA board makes no
mention of doing anything but sticking the card in.

So, do I need to flip any DIP switches or move any jumpers or anything else
  on the motherboard?

I have a Sony Trinitron Multisync monitor and a call to Fort Worth revealed
that I need to have DIP switches 1 and 2 on the VGA card set to ON and leave 3
and 4 off, instead of using the default of all OFF. There is no information in
the manual as to what these DIP switches do and that seems odd to me.

Any help you can provide or light you can shed will be appreciated.

Thanks, Hollie. Between you and Reggie I think I got it covered.

New subject: How does one get from 'Hollie' to 'Frobotz'? Me thinks there may
be a interesting story there somewhere...

Quite simple really - I'm (to put it mildly) rather fond of Infocom adventure
games. Frobotz is a term used in the games - Hollie is my real name and far to
normal for your's truly - Soooo . . .

Oh, yeah and Frappdazzle was to long to keep typing in. :-)

Windows on Tandy 1000TL (Re: Msg 14569)
     From: JIMREED To: JIMREED

  Since I asked this on both . . .

. . . this SIG and the PC SIG, I figured I should provide an update
on events in both places -- as others may well encounter the same problem.

  FROM PC SIG:

  Reggie,

  Thanks for the suggestion . . .

. . . but I have a TL, not an SX or TX. Additionally, I have more
information on the subject of Windows 286 not running on my 1000TL now.

Today, I called some friends at Tandy in Fort Worth and they, in turn, talked
to one of the engineers who had been working on that very problem just today!

It seems the VGA card has no bearing on the problem. Rather, they called me
back later to say that the reason Windows would lock up on me at the opening
screen is that when it "sees" the 1000TL's 80286 CPU, Windows "assumes" that
the TL has a 16-bit processor, rather than eight-bit.

Now, why it makes that mistake on a TL, but does not on the TX, also an 80286
machine, I did not think to ask. Windows 286 does run on a TX, because I went
to a friend's house and tried it. I suppose there is some difference in the
  hardware.

Assuming that is, indeed, the problem, they said they would have to notify
Microsoft, who would come up with a patch. How long that will take is anyone's
  guess.

I am sort of hoping that Greg Law might come through with a patch before
Microsoft does, now that the difficulty has been, hopefully, isolated.

Anyway, I suppose I'll have to tread water until someone comes to the rescue,
since I know not the least about patching it.

Again, though, thanks for the "comeback."

                                      -- Jim
