I am currently running a Tandy 1000TX with two 3 1/2" disk drives and I am
thinking of adding a hard disk. Any ideas or suggestions on the size and type
of hard disk would be appreciated. Also any prices or sources of purchase would
be appreciated. Thanks. Russ K.

Just one small personal opinion here Russ. Stay away from those drives
that use RLL Controllers. The Seagate ST238 and 238R are two examples.
They seem to crap out a lot. The controller writes special information
to track 0 and if this gets corrupted, there's no way to recover except
to do a low-level format all over again.

If you are not aware, you must use a "hardcard" on a TX with both drive bays
occupied. Either that or remove one of your floppies to accomdate the 1/2 height
hard drive.

Hard Drives International (not Hard Drive Specialist) has some great prices. I
have personally ordered two hard drives from them and was more than satisfied.

(They have a

$359 - in their latest ad).

     CACHE and TEMM for 1000TX
     From: RS232 To: ALL

I recently purchased a Tandy 1000 TX. Among the docs was a little brochure
titled, "Because there is no better value. ___ Tandy 1000 TX". In it is a
description of special utility programs provided with the operating system. One
such program is called CACHE, which is on the disk. The brochure says in part,
"Tandy's version supports conventional, extended, and expanded RAM. When used
with TEMM, CACHE can also use Shadow RAM." Question is, how can one obtain
TEMM? Yes, I have 768K.

     Printer problem
     From: LADD To: ALL

I am wondering if any can help me narrow down a problem I have having with my
Tandy 1000a and a Panasonic KXP 1091 printer. They worked well together for
several months until all of a sudden I keep getting extra line feeds. I was not
using lpdriver.sys originally, and without problems . When the extra linefeeds
first started I tried the mode lfoff command and got the message installable
print driver required, or something similar. So I added lpdrvr.sys to my
config.sys file and everything worked okay for a while.

Now it is flaking out again. If I am printing from dos using the dos print
command, everything is okay. But all my programs with their own printer drivers
that worked fine before give me extra linefeeds regardless of whether I use the
mode command or not.

Any Ideas on what I should try next (other than another trip to the Shack for
`service' [make me laugh] call)

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

The 1000HX can accomodate two 3.5 drives and an external 5.25 drive. I strongly
suggest that you look at the 1000SX if these are your needs. You have precious
little capability in the way of expansion on the HX and it will cost plenty. You
will soon discover that the 384K of memory in either machine will not be enough.
Uprgrading the HX is more costly and more difficult then the SX. Mike

I am not sure about the Panasonic but many printers can be programmed to "hold"

Check your manual and see if you have such a feature - and how to control it.

I cannot swear to this, but I believe that the TEMM is Tandy's Extended/Expanded
Memory Card (Module). The 128K you have above 640K is only for "video memory"
and not used as Extended or Expanded. In order to use a disk CACHE or Shadow
RAM, you must have more memory.

I believe that this is what the brochure is "trying" to tell you.

concerns your EMS board. What board is it? I haven't been able to find

In earlier versions of File Express, it was compatible with the T2000. Jack
Daugherty (JADAU) tested and upload the first version - and all he had was a
T2000. Perhaps the changes to the more recent versions have made this impossible
for the T2000.

In the introduction, it now states that File Express will run on 100% compatible
IBM PC, XT or AT machines, with 256K and DOS 2.0 or higher. Now here is the
tricky part, and I quote " Some semi-compatibles may require some special
configuring".

Before giving up on it use the /B switch (BIOS screen write). Load it using FE
/B.

Let me know if this works, and if not what happens when you try to load it.

I know it'll be watered down a bit. According to Ed Judge (I think it's Ed)
in a recent article in PCM, the products being marketed at other outlets
WON'T be exactly the same. However, in the case of the SX, it might, being
it's a discontinued model. I wonder if the SL has a bigger power supply?
I had a PC in the other day with 2 floppies and the 63.5 power supply.
I put a 10 meg HD on it and it wouldn't take it. Now maybe the supply was

The best place to start learning is in the General Topic of the database.
You simply type DA from the Main SIG menu and then GEN. If you then type
DIR, you will see many Help files. These are in ASCII format and may be
downloaded or LISTed (you can buffer capture when LISTing) to your display
screen.

This you will do from the PC Compatibles Menu. All Database files, are
over there.

Also, remember that you can type the "?" character at anytime and get help.

If you have any specific questions, let 'em fly!

RE: CACHE and TEMM for 1000TX (Re: Msg 13735)
     From: DOSWIZZ To: RS232

Gene,

Let me clear up a small misconception that you appear to have about the TEMM.SYS
driver. First of all, this refers to the Tandy 4000 (&LX) computers (actually
any 80386 machine with extended memory above the 1 megabyte boundary).

TEMM.SYS (on an 80386 processor) places the computer into protected virtual 8086
mode and runs DOS as a task in a virtual machine. Under these conditions, it
can then switch memory into and out of the virtual DOS partition by reassigning
the segment descriptor words and effectively performs the functions of a LIM EMS
Driver (Version 3.2).

The shadow memory referred to is part of the 4000 and 4000LX's address space
below 1 megabyte boundary. Tandy provides a full one megabyte of memory in this
region but all DOS tasks expect to see special IBM functions from A0000-FFFFF
(384K of memory). For example, A0000-AFFFF is reserved for EGA/VGA addresses,
B0000-BFFFF reserved for normal IBM/Tandy display adapter functions, C0000-DFFFF
is a supplemental service area containing extension ROMS for videos, hard disks,
EMS memory, scanners, etc., E0000-EFFFF usually reserved for a keyboard scan-out
ROM on some IBM compatibles, and F0000-FFFFF reserved for BOOT ROMS, etc.
Tandy's shadow memory on the Tandy 4000 occupies the same physical addresses.
TEMM.SYS allows you to have up to 1360 Kilobytes of EMS memory (on a machine
with 2 megabytes of memory) where other programs such as caches can only find
1024 Kilobytes. Tandy does use some of this 384 Kilobytes of shadow ram for the
BIOS code, hence the 1360-1024 = 336K is about the remaining ram left when the
BIOS gets done.

This does not help with your Tandy 1000TX -- sorry.

Actually, the problem may be related to the new video modes, especially if the
TL or SL has the additional 128KB of memory in them for video access or if these
machines are demonstrating the capabilities of a EGA/VGA card.

In both of these cases, software written for a 1000 has trouble identifying the
proper video adapter to use and will often identify the Tandy 1000 series
adapter as the preferential default even when other more effective options are
available.

Send your problem with assembly language. State what type of machine, video,
hardware, and memory you have as well as what type of assembler and linkage
editor you are using.

A source code fragment helps which you can enclose on DELPHI using the
".literal" and ".end literal" commands on lines bracketing your program text to
preserve its formatting.

Be specific in your description of the problem.

     Tandy 3000 EMS Woes
     From: DOSWIZZ To: ALL

While I am on the subject of Tandy computers and EMS cards, let me relate an
experience with a Tandy 3000NL that has caused me several days of grief.

This machine (3000NL) is really a nice product -- fast and small footprint. It
operates at 10 Megahertz for both the CPU and the IBM compatible 8/16 bit bus.
Our units have VGA display adapters (very nice -- Paradise extended capability
1/2 cards) and 170 Megabyte disk with the Adaptec SCSI interface (ultra-nice).
I wanted 2 MB of EMS RAM in each machine and I added the AST RamPage/286 card
fully populated to the list of goodies we bought from Tandy.

After spending most of the company's profit on the phone with one installation
(300 miles away) and with AST, we have come to the conclusion that the AST
RamPage will not operate with the 3000NL because it has to be operated at a bus
speed of 8 Megahertz with one wait state. Even when you use the SPEEDNL or
SETUPNL programs to slow down the 3000NL to 8 MHz, it does not work because the
computer is then operating at zero wait states.

You should upgrade your DOS version. This is not the reason that your drive
cannot read the utility diskette. You should be able to at least read the disk,
if not be able to run the programs on it.

An upgrade to at least DOS 3.0 should do the trick.

Hi Bob and Welcome. The SIG is really easy to use, but like anything else, takes
a some "getting used to". What we advise new users to do is go to the General
Topic of the Database (from the Main SIG menu, type DA{enter}, GEN{enter},
DIR{enter} ) and look at the HELP files. When you see one that you are
interested in (by using the DIR command), remember the name and type READ
FILENAME, the "FILENAME" being from the DIR listing.

This will give you the "description" of the program file(s) contained in that
"group". If the group only has one file (as the HELP groups do) you can either
LIST or XD (xmodem download) the file when you see the "....Action>" prompt.

Typing LIST will display the text to screen (you can buffer capture it if you
like).

Keep in mind that no matter where you are, you can type "?" and help will be
displayed for the section that you are in.

Elvis,

To learn how to use the Sig, I suggest you read some of the early messages
right here in Forum. Also, read the many HELP files by typing HELP at the
Sig> prompt and pick from dozens of HELP files.

Furthermore, it never hurts to purchase the manual. Call Delphi at
         (800) 544-4005.
You can also order it online from MAIN> at USING prompt. That is outside of
this Sig at MAIN> where you first signed on.

Also, in PCM Magazine (on the newsstands) every month is a column called
"Delphi Bureau" that is written especially to show people how to use this SIG.

Also, just about wherever you are, you can type ? or HELP to get more
information. At the MAIL> prompt typing HELP will give you more HELP files
than you're likely to ever read.

I have been having some strange things happen to my communications disk. I am
using Telix Ver. 3.11 on a Tandy 1000EX with 640k and a 3 1/2" external drive.
I use the Flushot virus protection program (Flu_shot, Flushot3 and FSP).
Something keeps altering m y MSDOS.SYS file so thast the disk will no longer
boot. I thought I had a bad 3 1/2" drive for a long time. When you run a program
on the corrupted file that lists all ASCII strings, you get the names of various
programs that are on the disk along with Tel ix. It looks like portions of the
FAT table have been copied to MSDOS.sys. If you recopy the system files from
another disk to the bad disk, everything works OK until the next time you use
it. Any suggestions? Everything worked fine for several months befo re this
began happening.

My cousin who lives in Bogota,Colombia . ..

There are two modes: Tandy mode and IBM mode. There are many functions that

As he explains: "The trouble is that when you switch from one mode to another,

You can always get on their board in the mornings ( about 7:00 cst ), but at
night around 9:00 I just keep redialing until I connect, about 15 minutes or so.
As far as the fix for Telix, I was putting the \N3 command in the init. string,
now I moved it to one of the dialing prefixes along with a couple of other bells
& whistles. The boards that I know use MNP, I assign that prefix to, the boards
that don't, I use a different prefix, one that contains the N command for direct
dial. I believe Telix has 3 dialing prefixes that you can define in the Modem
Configuration. Like I said, it was all in the stupid docs, but who reads them
anyhow. So far everything seems to be working great.
  Thanks again for you help.

external memory
board leaving you with either 128K or 256K of memory, depending upon your
system. The correct modification which is now documented in the "other" service
database is "Connect U46-5 and U46-7" (ground, not 5volts). My T2000 now comes
up with 768K of memory, I hope to be able to make the second modification to get

Drive alingment is best left to a technician, it is not an involved process, but
takes special equipment.

Usually a problem occurs with "other" drives that try read what a misaligned
drive has written, but not with the drives "own" read/write.

Your problem could be in the cable or connections to the external drive. Check
this and if possible, substitute another cable and see if the problem continues.

Perry Computers (800-248-3823) specializes in Tandy computers. They advertise
both EGA and VGA cards, as well as monitors. They currently advertise a Tandy
EGA card for $205.00 and a Tandy EGM-1 (EGA) monitor for $510.00.

In my opinion, EGA as passe - VGA is the way to go and is "now" cheaper. Perry's
Analog VGA monitor is $425.00. The Vega Video 7 (VGA) card is $200.00.

Keep in mind that once you change your video driver, you will loose the special
Tandy graphics modes, as your Tandy video driver (on the motherboard) will be
disabled.

Welcome aboard!

Check to make sure that your "specified" upload directory contains the file that
you wish to transfer.

Also, it may be that the Jmodem module is "external" to older versions of Telix.
Telix would then need a "path" to find the external module.

I am stabbing at the dark here, but it may give you some ideas. This problem has
arisen with several other Telecom. programs and these were the asnwers.

The easiest (there is no cheap way with the price of chips) to upgrade is to buy
a memory expansion board, with 0K of memory. Then, shop around for the best chip
prices. Depending on how much memory you want above 640K, some expansion boards
give you the option of using 64K chips, which are much cheaper than 256K chips.

The disk cache that comes with DOS does a creditable job - there are better, but
that depends on how much you are willing to pay. After you add the board and
chips, I think that you will find that the DOS version works "just fine"!

     From: MISAL To: JLPRATT

Hmmmmm......I see no reason to physically disable your video from the
motherboard. Although the "motherboard" video driver is still present when you
place a video driver (EGA/VGA) in an expansion slot, the Tandy video is not
being output to the monitor, the EGA/VGA is. And, as long as the signal is being
picked up by the "bus slot" that the card is plugged into, you should have video
output the VGA/CGA monitor.

If you didn't, call Perry and ask for the "support technician". Confront him
with what I have just outlined. I am extremely anxious to hear what he/she has
to say - BEFORE I call them!

It is possible that they are going on the "video auto-sense" of the video card
being interferred with by the Tandy driver. BUT - one can override this if
necessary on the Paradise, Orchid and Vega cards that I have seen.

Ernie,
Sorry to be so long in getting back to you. The utilty is
GEMPRINT.BAS, and it's in the PC and/or WRITERS' SIGs as GEMPRINT.ARC
or GEMPRINT.BAS. (It changes your GRAPHICS.COM or GRAPHICS.EXE, depending
on which vesion of DOS you have. You run GRAPHICS, with the printer
on, and you're set.)
I've found another way to print virtually any screen graphics,
bit-mapped or not, too: use something called IMCAP (I think it's available
in PC SIG). It is a PD program that catures screens to binary files which
can be turned into typset/repro, ready for pasteup, by one company. A
number of book publshers use it (all the screen dumps in my DELPHI: THE
OFFICIAL GUIDE were done with it). Capture the screen in question,
rebott your computer, then run GRAPHICS from your DOS disk, adn then
use the PrtSc key to send the image displayed by IMCAP';s "IMMGR"
direct to your screen.
(If that's sketchy or confusing, E-mail me KZIN for detals.)_

XMODEM is MUCH faster than old KERMIT the FROG. But, if you have PROCOMM,
then by all means use YMODEM or YMODEM-BATCH. These are superior to XMODEM
and much much faster than KERMIT. If you have to or want to use XMODEM,
at least use WXMODEM here on DELPHI. It's windowed XMODEM that sends and

Yeah, I know what you mean about staying with Tandy. We have a pretty good crew

I think you will see a DEFINATE price drop in teh 286's REAL soon. Out here you
can get a GOOD 286 with VGA and 1MEG Ram with 1 1.44 MEG Drive and 1 1.2 MEG
Drive and 30 MEG HD for about $1600 or lower.
Personaly, I think that most will wait for the 586 that is in the Testing
phase(suppose to be less BUGGY then the 486). All I have heard about it so far
is it suppose to be the IBM's answer to the AMIGA in multitasking.
I did see some 386 at the local COMPUTER SWAP MEET (brand NEW computers) with
the same setup as the 286 above for under $2000. But these prices are a LITTLE
too high for me at the moment when I have getting all the uses I need out of

While the software program can tell if the drive is out of alignment, it cannot
remedy problems that it discovers. The only way to do this is to physically
adjust the internal drive mechanism.

I do know of program that will monitor the drive while one makes these
