	Version 1.06

Welcome to Merlyn!

With Merlyn, mathematics comes alive. Create equations quickly and
easily, you can add new mathematical symbols whenever you need them.
Manipulating equations is as simple as highlighting a term and picking
a command. You can simplify, combine, move terms and much more, all with
a keystroke or menu selection. We think you will find Merlyn to be the
fastest, most flexible tool for handling equations that you've ever used.

1) Installation

The installation for Merlyn is a typical Windows install program. It
will run on any Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 system. The install process
is relatively simple, other than creating a directory, program group,
and installing the program files, the only thing the install does is
to put a couple of fonts in the Windows\System subdirectory and add
them to the list of fonts in WIN.INI. An uninstaller is included with
the program.

In order for the fonts to be available, you will need to restart your
computer after installation (the fonts contain mathematical symbols that
are used extensively in the documents and tutorials that come with Merlyn).

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
------------------------------
Merlyn requires Windows 3.1 or Windows 95, an 80486 or newer processor
(486 at 66MHz or better recommended) and 8 MB of system memory (16Mb
recommended). The standard installation requires approximately 7 MB
of disk space.

2) Manual
---------

The manual can be downloaded from our web site
(http://www.hylandsoftware.com). It has been packaged in Adobe Acrobat
Reader format and comes with its own installation utility. If you don't
already have Acrobat Reader on your system, there is a jump on our
download page to the Adobe web page where you can download the current
version of Acrobat Reader (it's free).

3) Tutorials
------------

The tutorials are documents that can be opened in Merlyn. To open the
tutorials, select open from the file menu and select tutorial.equ from
the list of files. The remaining tutorials are accessible from in this
file. Since Merlyn is rather unique, we have designed the tutorials to
be the primary tool for learning the program. Even if you don't normally
bother with tutorials, we think you will get up and running fastest by
spending a little time working through the tutorials.

4) Documents included with the program
--------------------------------------

One of the unique features of Merlyn is that it's mathematical capabilities
are determined in largely by rules contained in the program's documents.
Each document can include a list of other documents whose rules are
available. When you create a new document, typically the first thing
you do is to specify which files will be available to the new document.

In the calculus file, there are currently only a few integrals available, a
more a more extensive integral table is included with the registered version.

5) Bug reporting
----------------

If you find bugs, please contact us by e-mail:

   support@hylandsoftware.com

Our web page is at http:\\www.hylandsoftware.com, we will put updates to
document and tutorial files on the web as we make changes.

The most useful bug reports contain specific, detailed descriptions of the
steps that will cause the problem to occur. If you can't get the problem to
recur it's very difficult for us to fix it.

If the bug isn't something that occurs repeatedly, it will help if you send
the file as an attachment by e-mail describing the problem. We would greatly
appreciate it if you can edit the file you attach down to the minimum
necessary to demonstrate the problem.

6) License
-----------

Merlyn is Shareware, you can try the program free of charge for 30 days.
If you intend to use the program after the 30 day trial period is over,
you are expected to purchase a fully licensed copy from Hyland Software.

7) A few other notes
---------------------

Some of the text handling routines have not yet been optimized. Text
highlighting gets slow on big paragraphs and text still has some flicker
when you edit.

8) Uninstalling Merlyn
----------------------

As part of the installation process, an uninstall icon is created. If you want
to remove Merlyn from your system just double click the uninstall icon and
follow the directions.
