VSOCKS Light README
====================

VSOCKS Light is a simple, basic SOCKS firewall proxy server. Install it
on a Windows 95/NT PC with a modem connection to the Internet, and a connection
to your LAN and you can use the Internet from anywhere on your LAN (you need
the TCP/IP protocol on your network).

VSOCKS Light is FREE. It has only basic functionality, but it should be
sufficient for a small/medium sized LAN. VSOCKS Light supports UNLIMITED
connections inwards.

We will not be adding more functionality to VSOCKS Light (but we will fix
bugs). If there is enough demand we may create 'VSOCKS' (without the 'Light')
which has more features, but is chargeable.

Technical support for VSOCKS Light is NOT available, except to registered
owners of the VPOP3 email server software
(see http://www.pscs.co.uk/software/vpop3.html)

Configuring the server
=======================

Copy VSOCKS.EXE into a directory, and run it. A small icon of a SOCK should
appear in the Windows taskbar. If you right-click on this you can choose
'Properties' to set it up. It should be relatively straight forward.

Configuring the clients
========================
To configure a client PC, set up the DNS server as the IP address of the
PC running VSOCKS.

To configure MS Internet Explorer or Netscape on the Client, set up a SOCKS
proxy at the IP address of the PC running VSOCKS.

To configure other client software you will need something like SOCKSCAP
(http://www.socks.nec.com) or the 'Hummingbird' SOCKS Client
(http://www.hummingbird.com/freestuff.htm) which lets you use any
TCP/IP programs via a SOCKS firewall. Both SOCKSCAP and the
Hummingbird SOCKS client are also FREE.

Technical Info
---------------

VSOCKS Light supports the SOCKS V4 protocol and is also a DNS gateway.
VSOCKS Light ONLY supports the 'CONNECT' command of SOCKS V4, NOT the 'BIND'
command. This means that it works fine for all outgoing connections, but
will not allow incoming connections.

VSOCKS Light does NOT support HTTP proxies or any other protocol specific
proxies. The SOCKS protocol supports proxying of any TCP/IP protocol.

Licence & Other stuff
---------------------

VSOCKS Light is NOT Public Domain, it is FREEWARE. This means that it
belongs to us, but we grant you a free licence to use VSOCKS Light as a
SOCKS firewall proxy. Any redistribution of VSOCKS Light must also
contain this README.TXT file. VSOCKS.EXE and this README.TXT file must NOT
be modified in any way.
