WINDOWS 95 BACKUP
-----------------
Always perform the backup from a DOS prompt (or DOS box) inside of the
WINDOWS 95 graphical interface. This assures that the Long File Names will
be available to the Valitek backup program when the files are written to
tape. You must use Valitek software version 3.4a or later. For SCSI port
use you must use 5.04a or later. If you accidently run the software from
a DOS prompt which cannot see the Long File Names the software will report
the message "The Operating System reports no long filename support".

WINDOWS 95 RESTORE
------------------
There are two methods of restoring in WINDOWS 95:

1) Normal Restore :

This is the most common method. It is used when your
WINDOWS 95 operating system is functioning correctly. You may want to
restore a group of files or directories from tape. Run the Valitek
restore from a DOS prompt inside of your WINDOWS 95 environment. The
files selected for restore will be copied from the restore tape to your
disk along with the long filenames. This method is not used to restore
WINDOWS 95 system files or directories such as \START MENU\.

2) Restoring WINDOWS 95 from tape :

This is the less common method. It is useful when your WINDOWS 95 system
has been damaged. Using this method you can restore your WINDOWS 95
environment completely from tape including all registry and shortcut
information. You may use this method to upgrade your hard-disk or
recover from a severe hard-disk crash. Of course, you cannot restore
information which has not been backed up. So perform frequent backups.

The following procedure is a complete step-by-step process for restoring to
a newly formatted hard disk either for a new hard disk upgrade or for a
complete recovery from a hard disk crash without the need to re-install
Windows 95.

When the PC is booted in DOS only mode, as is the case when you boot from a
WINDOWS 95 Startup Disk, the device drivers for long file name support are
not loaded. They are only loaded when the PC is booted into the graphical
environment. Therefore, when a restore is performed from DOS, long file
names cannot be restored in a single step. The "F10-LFN Attach" is used to
attach the long name to a file that was previously restored under DOS.

The following steps are used to backup and restore to a "new" or "newly
formatted" hard disk.

1) PREPARATION : MAKE A "WINDOWS 95 STARTUP DISKETTE".
	a) Insert a blank diskette into drive A:
	b) Left click the Start button and select "Settings"
	c) Select "Control Panel"
	d) Double-Click on "Add/Remove Programs"
	e) Click on "Startup Disk"
	f) Click on "Create Disk"

2) PERFORM A FULL BACKUP TO VALITEK TAPE.
	a) Double-Click on "My Computer"
	b) Double-Click on the drive where the Valitek software is located
	c) Double-Click on "MAIN.EXE"
	d) Select F4 "File Backup"
	e) During the backup, you will encounter two swap files that
Windows 95 holds open: "C:\386SPART.PAR" and
"C:\WINDOWS\WIN386.SWP". These files will stop with an error:
"Error opening file - Quit/Retry/Skip/Help". It is not necessary
to try to backup these files because they do not need to be
restored. To avoid receiving an error message and stopping the
backup process, you can either untag these two files or change
the following in the Options Menu:
		i) Press F9 "Options"
ii) Move the cursor down to "Log open file names to
		     OPENFILE.LOG ?"
iii) Press the + key to change the selection from "No" to
"Yes"This option will keep the software from stopping on
the error and instead will log the error to a text file
called "OPENFILE.LOG" which you can review later.
	f) Press Esc to close this menu
	g) Press F3 "Backup All"
	h) Select "Append to the end of tape" or "Overwrite the tape"
		i) Select Append if you are appending data to an existing
		    backup on tape
ii) Select Overwrite to completely overwrite data on the tape
if it is a new tape
	g) Type in the name that you want to give this dataset
	h) When the backup is complete, press Esc to go back to the "MAIN"
menu. Select F5 "Verify Tape" to verify that the integrity of the
tape cartridge media is OK for storage.

3) TO PERFORM A RESTORE TO A NEW PC OR HARD DISK.
	a) Restart the PC and boot from the "Windows 95 Startup Diskette".
This process will not work if you boot from a DOS 6.xx disk.
	b) DO NOT FORMAT THE DISK IF YOU STILL HAVE IMPORTANT DATA ON IT.
	    THE DATA WILL BE DESTROYED.
From the A:> prompt, type: FORMAT C: /S
	c) When the format is finished and you are back to an A:> prompt,
remove the Windows 95 Startup Diskette, insert the Valitek Backup
Software diskette (ver 3.4M) and type "MAIN"
	d) Select F6 "File Restore"
	e) Select F9 "Restore Menu"
	f) From the "Restore Menu":
		i) Select the correct "Restore Destination Drive"
ii) Select "Entire Dataset" for "Restore Data"
iii) Select "YES" for "Overwrite System Files"
iv) Select "YES" for "Overwrite Hidden Files"
		v) Select "YES" for "Overwrite Read Only Files"
vi) Select "YES" for "Overwrite Other Existing Files"
vii) Press <ENTER> to go to the next menu
	g) Press <ENTER> to select the defaults under "Restore Target Path".
This will be "<Restore Files To The Directories They Came From>".

4) LONG FILE NAME ATTACH
	a) When the Restore is completed 100% and the drive activity has
stopped, exit out of the Valitek software, remove the "Valitek Backup
Software Diskette", and restart the PC.
NOTE: When the PC restarts into Windows 95, it will look
slightly different and also the "Start Menu" will not be intact
due to the lack of long file name information.
	b) After Windows 95 has completed its startup procedure, Double-Click
	    on "My Computer".
	c) Double-Click on the drive letter where the Valitek software is
	    located.
	d) Double-Click on "MAIN.EXE".
	e) After the VALITEK Tape Backup Software is loaded, Select F6
	    "File Restore".
	f) Select "W" for "Wild Tag".
	g) At the "File Mask:" comment, type *.*
	h) Select F10 "LFN Attach".
	i) Press the letter of the drive that you are attaching long file
	    names to:
"Choose long file name target drive (A-Z), <ESC>=Abort, ?=Help ==>"
	j) Press "Y" when you are prompted:
"Attach long file names from tape to files on drive C: ? (Y/N)"
	k) When this process is complete, you will need to restart Windows 95
for the changes to take effect.
