     From: RLYOUNG To: ALL

A lot of you Tandy 1000SX users will be happy to know it's a LOT easier to
install hard drives in your machines with Western Digital's new controlers.

I put a Seagate ST-238R ( I know Greg ) with the WD1004A-27X controller.
Previously, this involved disabling switch 2 on the motherboard and cutting
traces on the controller as well as soldering pins 2 and 3. All I had to do is
put a jumper on W27 to change WD's interupt from 5 to 2 and THAT WAS IT!! I also
jumpered W26 to disable that crazy 17 sector crap that the WD defaults to.

Sooooo...Jump on those mail-order drives but specify the new line of controllers
is what you need.

Appears to be the sound chip. If it were anything else, it would show up
elsewhere. I believe that the sound chip is soldered to the motherboard? If so,
there is a the possibility that you could damage it while desoldering - unless

I assume that you have run 1000 copies on your laser (as you state is indicated
on the meter). Also, that you have never reset the meter.

Periodic cleaning of a laser printer is essential. After 1000 sheets, it is not
unusual to get the cleaner kit message - however, in this case, I think the R.S.
employee may have forced this by a messy installation of the toner cartridge.

Hi Larry,

Well, I'm just now starting to enjoy the 1400 LT for my own use rather than it
just being an IBM compatible to run programs from work.

As for the pixels, perhaps you could set up something in your autoexec.bat or
config.sys file to set the screen colors (ok, gradients <grin> ), but I imagine
that the game would probably reset these values anyway.

Have you tried using the external monitor port? I hooked my 1400's composite
output to a SONY monitor with the expected results -- poor character definition.
HOWEVER, my CRT screen was a black background with white characters! Perhaps
the this setup would be ok for a game. All I did was go into the setup routine
on the 1400 after booting up normally. CTRL-ALT-INSERT will get you . One of
these days I may have to get a color monitor, but for now the LCD screen is just
fine for me.

As far as the microwave business goes.....I'm basically space oriented, that is,
my dishes all point more or less upwards. But to get signals to my earth-
station so that I can put them up on the birds, I have been busy setting up
terrestrial links -- frequencies far higher than I normally use. This means far
more exacting directional calculations which I do on my Model 200. (oops, sorry
gang!) Yeah, yeah, I meant my 1400 --- right.

external accessories (not including the internal hard-disk), we're pretty much
set. That makes it pretty much cut-and-dry easy about what hardware or software

Hey thanks for the tip on the file and cache commands. I'll have to play with
the file command to make sure that using a value of 4 won't upset Procomm +.

As far as the cache command, I should have checked in earlier -- its now 12:10
am and I'm dying to dive in and see what its all about. However, its pretty
near sack time ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz. Cache is on tomorrow's #1 priority list.

By the way, have you ever used the extra 128K of ram in the 1400 for a virtual,
or RAMDISK? I do, and find it handy and not nearly so volatile on these laptops
since they run on batteries -- It's kind of neat having a drive C> containing
command.com files or some other data files I use.

Two of my favorite programs are some oldies but goodies by Leading Edge that
automatically back up files and also the database files reads and stores data to
and from disk, hardly keeping any in memory so you can have a very large
database. The main problem is that when the DB gets real big, disk access can
get slow, especially when using floppies. By setting my DB parameter to read
and save from the ramdisk, the speed is lightning quick -- and safe as I
mentioned before when I run from the battery.

Cache'ing the Portable Way....(sorry Marty <grin>)........

I agree with you about the RAMDISK and use it for virtually all interim storage.
I see you already know about storing COMMAND.COM there and then (I presume)
identifying it with a COMMAND C: in your AUTOEXEC.BAT... First Choice overwrites
the COMMAND.COM portion of RAM, and it was a pain to have to load the system
disk every time I exited. By the way, downloading files from DELPHI (or others)
via XMODEM is also substantially faster when you download to the RAMDISK.

Sounds like your TX's clock cycles are too fast for the Smartwatch. An example
would be that if the Smartwatch looks for 100 cycles to process 1/60 of a minute

is gonna be fast.

I still haven't looked up the Cache command yet Larry, but I have incorporated
it into my batch files. Haven't really noticed anything special yet -- but that
is because I'm not using disk-intensive software (at least, not until this
weekend).

Apparently, it doesn't interfere with ramdisk operation. None of my MS-Dos
references mention that cache command, except perhaps my official MS-dos book at
work. Since "Tandy" showed up in the command line after it was executed in the
batch file, is the syntax Tandy specific? Or are the commands you showed me of
a more general variety?

You might be interested to know that GRID's new laptop (The company that merged

Grid laptops to. It looks exactly like a 1400 only its black.

     RE: (Re: Msg 14846)
     From: SUDLOW To: GUB

Brian, I think the CACHE command is one of Tandy's best kept secrets, and almost
everyone I've talked to found it while checking out the directory on their
system disk. (There are a few other Tandy-specific surprises there too)
Documentation can be found in Tandy's MS-DOS/GW BASIC manual, in a seperate (
enclosed) book containing the Tandy enhancements. To get you started: CACHE will
load the diskcache with a default 30K of RAM and 4 seconds floppy valid time.
CACHE nn allows you to specify your choice of RAM size. Once it's loaded you can
set the floppy valid time (the more the better) with CACHE/T:n. Other options
are as follows...

(sorry...DELPHI doesn't like the slash there!) I'll omit... 8 is for 8 sector
diskettes 9 is for 9 sector diskettes (default) C clears the accumulated CACHE
statistics G displays the current CACHE status O toggles CACHE on and off R
resets CACHE and clears all data in the CACHE buffer S displays the CACHE
statistics W saves disk WRITES as well as reads T (floppy valid time) sets the
number of seconds that the data will remain
valid in the buffer. Longer is faster, but if you need to switch disks before
the time expires, the new one won't be recognized. Setting it to 0 is the
fastest (especially in conjunction with lots of RAM in the buffer), but you
can't switch disks at all. I recommeded 6 seconds because that's the longest
setting which gets out of my way invisibly most of the time. As I mentioned the
first time, I recommended 57K because it still allow s 512K for applications
(with 9 files and 4 buffers in CONFIG.SYS). OP optimum with 57K and 6 seconds.
Having said all of that...these ARE still floppies and will never be too fast!
But I knocked over 20 seconds off the PC Labs Benchmarks...so it's not too bad.
I'd be interested to know if anyone out there has compared other disk cache
utilities and could let us know how they stack up??? (Hint to ALL)
Other Tandy goodies available to you are DISKOPT which de-fragments files and
DC which compresses files (I assume somewhat like .ARC). There are a few more
listed, but they aren't available on the 1400 system disk.

In answer to your last question...I couldn't quite bring myself to double the
999.00 sale price (on the 1400) to install a hard disk. I may go outboard one
of these days if I get tired enough of disk swapping, but so far it's OK. In
reading the earlier paragraphs, I notice a lot of things which I could have made
more clear, so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! Thanks!

either you have a hardware problem with the TX clock (unlikely) or your

reprogramming the software timer. There are several programs that do this, and
chances are you are running one of them.

     YADDAY is 9/8/89!
     From: JIMREED To: ALL

  I'll be darned if . . .

. . . it isn't YADDAY time again. Yep, 9/8/89!

Have I told you about YADDAY? It is the palendromic holiday a friend of mine
invented (discovered?) when he was living out in California.

Yadday is the one day of the year when the numerical notation for the date reads
the same forward and backward.

Last year, YADDAY fell on 8/8/88. Before that, 7/8/87.

The girl in shipping pointed out to me the existence of European YADDAY, which
I had not considered before, even though we have been celebrating YADDAY for
almost 20 years. (Usually local radio and TV, newspapers pick up our ranting
about it. Wires services sometimes, too.) She points out that 1989 YADDAY in
Europe falls on August 9 instead of September 8 since, as you know, they put the
day first in numerical notation of date.

Anyway, during the 121 palendromic minutes of the day, with special
consideration at NOON, we reflect on the essential duality of nature and the
dynamic polarity of the universe and quote palendromes, of which I have a
respectable collection. It is sort of a homegrown holiday with no purpose other
than frivolity, but I always get YADDAY greetings from folks who've come to know
and love it -- a different day every year, and some years there is none while
other years, there can be dozens.

Now, to how Courtney Noe came upon interest in palindromes:

He was standing at a bus stop in Yreka, California, one day and while staring at
a local sign in a window noticed that YREKA BAKERY read the same, forward and
backward. This was the inspiration for his interest in palindromes themselves
and later he founded YADDAY. We call him the YADDADDAY, our founding father.

Courtney used to work for Rainbow and PCM Magazines.

Anyway, Happy Yadday, all!

                                      -- Jim

I am not sure that the colormap would work with the LCD video of the 1400. Have
you tried a simple MODE BW 80? I realize that you want color shades, but I have
had some luck with using the BW command on certain programs.

Look in the database for a utility called BWVID. It will make the lcd screen

I've done some closer reading in the Technical Reference Manual and it
appears you must make more than one function call depending on what you are
doing.

INT 10h service 0 sets the CRT mode.

AH = 0 AL = (mode value)

        AL = 4 for 320x200 color graphics
AL = 5 for 320x200 black and white graphics with 4 shades
AL = 6 for 640x200 black and white graphics with 2 shades
        AL = 7 (reserved)
AL = 8 for 160x200 color graphics with 16 colors
AL = 9 for 320x200 color graphics with 16 colors
AH (must be a misprint and mean AL) = A for 640x200 color
             graphics with 4 colors

NOTE: If the high order bit of the AL register is 1 then
the video buffer is not cleared.

Keep reading? (Y/N)

INT 10h service 11 sets the color palette

AH = 11 BH = 0 Set background color (0-15) to color value in BL.

        BL = color value (0 = black / 1 = blue / 2 = green / 3 =
             cyan / 4 = red / 5 = magenta / 6 = yellow / 7 = gray
             / 8 = dark gray / 9 = light blue / 10 = light green
             / 11 = light cyan / 12 = light red / 13 = light
             magenta / 14 = light yellow / 15 = white)

OR

BH = 1 Set default palette to the number (0 or 1) in BL.

     In black and white modes:

        BL = 0: 1 for white
        BL = 1: 1 for black

     In 4 color graphics modes:

        BL = 0 (1 = green / 2 = red / 3 = yellow)
        BL = 1 (1 = cyan / 2 = magenta / 3 = white)

     In 16 color graphics modes:

        (1 = blue / 2 = green / 3= cyan / 4 = red / 5 = magenta
        / 6 = yellow / 7 = light gray / 8 = dark gray / 9 = light
        blue / 10 = light green / 11 = light cyan / 12 = light red
        / 13 = light magenta / 14 = yellow (must be a misprint and
really mean light yellow) / 15 = white)

Also included is this Note:

For alpha modes palette entry 0 indicates the border. For graphics mode palette
entry 0 indicates the border and the background color.

Personally I'm confused as to what exactly is to go into BL but maybe
you can make some sense out of it.

INT 10h service 16 sets the palette registers

AH = 16

AL = 0 Set palette register
BL = (number of the palette register [0-15] to set)
BH = (color value to store)

AL = 1 Set border color register
BH = (color value to store)

AL = 2 Set palette color value to store and border registers
        ES:DX :points to a 17 byte list
bytes 0-15 = (values for palette registers 0-15)
byte 16 = (value for the border register)

NOTE: CS,SS,DS,ES,BX,CX,DX are preserved.

a short and incomplete answer.

Another thought comes to mind. On my malfunctioning plus 1200 I did'nt like the
way it plugged in. very tight and had to press down on the board to align the
back panel screws. also its important that the foil makes contact with the
mounting bracket, ie the foil goes between the bracket and plastic case. I
believe that the foil is part of the grounding and shielding of the circuit.
When mine failed I would completely unplug the board and plug it in again and
most often it would start working again but not always. Try that instead of
rebooting ---(tho I guess you'll have to since you'll have to turn off the power
to unplug the board)--- I wouldn't try unplugging the board with the power on.
Years ago we could do that but with the new cmos chips its chancey. I still
have the feeling that there might be a run of connector problems with that
modem. I've seen it before in the industry. regards, pete

Bob, do you know if the Segate 40 meg half hight hard drive uses a different
controler card than the 65 meg Segate ?

My 40 meg is making some awful sounds, like it's about to throw a rod or
something and I expect it's only a matter of time before it dies on me.

It's not big enough to run everything we need on our BBS and so I am looking
around for a larger one, but it must also be a half hight drive or it won't fit
into my Tandy 3000. It stacks three half hight drives on the far right of the
machine and there's no room for anything else.

I am considering that when I get a new 65 meg (hoping) that I can fix, or get
this other one fixed and use it as an external drive later on.

I have been working now going on two days straight to get this H.D. cleaned up
so I will have a bit more room on it for new files.

We are still getting your Photo Echo and I hope you are getting a few messages

you can't be THAT old. Heck, I thought you were just a kid. Grin. Anyway it's
allways fun to dig into something and learn. Did you follow the basic example I
included to access dos. It simply requires putting the assembly lang instr into
a string and then calling the string using VARPTR to get the address of the
string. I've been doing that for years now since my ole silver gray Model 1.

I wish that were true, but I took some of my retirement money when I changed
jobs to get my "dream" system. Of course it's been supplanted by 25mhz, 33mhz,
and now 486 systems. Gee, I guess I'll have to settle with it for a while. (a
longggg while) A year ago I didn't even have a hard disk, now 40 megs isn't
enough. After the ruckus my wife raised, I'll have to be happy for some time to

TANDY 1037 MODEM BOARD IN T1000A
     From: THETINK To: ALL

I RECENTLY INSTALLED A TANDY CAT. 1037, 2400 Bd MODEM BOARD IN MY T1000A AND
FOUND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SET THE PROTOCOLS WITH THE ORIGINAL DESKMATE (VER 01.01)
SOFTWARE. I DO HAVE, HOWEVER A TELIX (HAYES COMPATIBLE) PROGRAM THAT WORKS VERY
WELL.
MY PROBLEM IS THAT ALL MY KIDS AND I ARE SOMEWHAT SPOILED BY THE DESKMATE
FUNCTIONS AND THE [PHONE] OPTION. IS THERE ANY WAY TO CONFIGURE THIS BOARD SO
THAT DESKMATE WILL WORK IT?

You should be in the terminal mode in order to send commands to the modem. If
you look, you will find a modem initialization string within Xtalk. You could
change this string to ATE1 S7=60 S11=55 V1 X1. I believe that this will take
care of your problem.

You can choose the modem type from within Deskmate's MODEM SETUP. You should
choose the Hayes compatible setting, rather than the Tandy modem setting.

If the Radio Shack stores are too expensive for you you can try Computer Plus.

work.

     Modem Woes
     From: RVCUSER To: EFFINGER

If all those sugestions don't work then I have another answer to your problem.
I have a Tandy 1000 HX and had a great deal of trouble with my plus 1200 modem.

I found out that Tandy makes the brackets too big and the brackets touch the
modem too closely and grounds it the wrong way. According to an article in PCM
(I'll give the issue later) tandy does not plan to fix this problem as of the
writing of the article. I placed tin foil between the bracket and th modem
board it selfe and after screwing the bracket on and making sure that the foil
was under the bracket between the modem and the metal plate, I booted up and
connected.

Good luck in your quest.

P.S. I had to take it back to Radio Shack 3 times.

On the 3000NL, if you are adding 128K to up it to 640K (the five chips), you
don't have to do anything. Just plug the chips in. If you want to add more,
let me know and I will get that for you.

     BASIC
     From: BJ85 To: PAULPETERSEN

Hi Pete,

Just got my October issue of Byte magazine in the mail today.

Now, since I know you are very interested in BASIC, there is an exelent article
on page 268, by Mr. Bill (Bill Gates), celebrating the 25th birthday of BASIC.

What I found interesting was, the way similar historic happenings (that's the
way it really was) are seen from a different point of view.

About the only thing I disagree with him about is, he views BASIC as a rising
star (compiler Quick Basic that is). Gee what else would you expect him to say.

And the only thing he forgot to tell about was, the crocadile tears he shead in
public, way back then, complaining that he didn't even make Minumn Wage writting
the first MicroSoft BASIC. Gee I guess there are things we'd all like to forget.

To tell the truth, I can't fault him on either account. I'd have written the
article the same way.

In any event, pick up copy of Byte mag. it's a good article.

Bob Jack

Here's what you do, Bill. You buy a new monitor that looks as much like the old
as possible - case-wise. Then you tell your wife (should she notice a change in
the graphics) that it a a program you aquired from someone and it really
improves the graphics. :-)

printer. None of the programs I use mention it, but by selecting an EPSON JX as
the printer in the various configuration setups, it has worked with every
program I've tried it on.

Jack, I have the Micro Mainframe EMS board 3.2 LIM version. I just received
an upgrade offer this week for LIM 4.0 for $39.00 plus $3.00 shipping.

Before that, I was a little pissed off as I thought I would be left in the

Thanks, reggie. Desqview really needs 4.0 to make it run teh way I would like it
to (or the way I think it is going to!). Do you use Desqview? If not, maybe y
you can tell me what you use your expanded memory for (ram disk, disk cache, etc
.).Also, can you tell me how to bring down the system (motherboard) memory to
256k on a 1000sx? Can I do this? It came out of the box with 384. I plan on
getting Turbo EMS. The Micro Mainframe people thought it was a good deal. If you
(or anyone else out there) use desqview, maybe you can help me out. It seems as
though the setup can get pretty hairy. I have a 286 express board that uses an
8k cache (now set on the 640k fence). I wonder if I'm going to have to reset
this figure to the 256 (or 384) k figure that I set my motherboard ram amount
to. This one is going to be tricky, going through q'deck, MicroM, Lantron, and a
bankrupt PC Technologies! Thank God for 800 #'s. To make things even more
interesting, the 2.2 desqview comes with a 2.0 manual with a 4 page addendum,
and the "add a program " screen is like nothing shown in either one! Oh, well, I
think I'll definitely get over my phobia about tinkering around inside the Tandy
box before this one is over.
