I'm not sure about you having to get the Tandy down to 256K. This is what
Q'deck says is optimum, but it will work if you have more conventional memory.
The only limitation here is that you will lose some memory you have installed.
As far as the "add a program" screen, the most important part is if the program
is a direct screen writer and you don't have a patch to fix it. Using such a
program, will not allow you to use windows. Bleed over will occure between
windows on the screen. Of course using the whole screen as one window and
telling the setup you are using a direct screen writer will take care of this
problem. The only other area that you have to be careful of is when you are
running telecommunication programs. Be sure you set the correct com port and do
not allow any other program to use that port. Also, you cannot allow that
program to be swapped out to disk, as this will cause it to terminate and screw
up your communications.

It may be the the jumpers on the hard card are not set correctly. On the
Miniscribe, in a 286 system, JP1 and JP2 should be jumpered along with DS1. Take

No, I don't have Deskview. I might get it now that I'll have the 4.0 upgrade.
I use it as a Ram disk and a cache. I have Flash which has a colapsible
disk cache. If I allocate 2 meg for the cache, then load a ram disk, my ram
disk will be 2 meg also taking away from the cache memory. If I delete any
files on the ram disk, Flash returns it to the cache.

I have the Micro EMS, and PC Techs 286 Accelerator as well. I think you can
only take out the one bank (8 chips) that were used to bring it up to 640K.
You then must put jumpers on E1 and E2. That'll take you back to 384K. I
don't know about knocking it down to 256 though.

Keep me posted on the Deskview thing though.

Thanks for the tips, John. The erason I want to disconnect all but 256k on the
motherboard is to get 480k available for secondary programs, assuming I'll be
using the first window for a commo program and won't be able to have it "switch
out". The 1000sx comes with 384k installed, and I now have 640, but getting it
down to 256 will increase the memory available for the second program by 128k!
Again, thanks for the help. I find that you have to fine tune stuff even when
just working without expanded memory.

Does the 286 Express card allow you to configure some of your expanded memory as
extended memory (when you get 4.0) or do you need to have a real 16 bit AT or

Is there a shareware version of a utility that checks your system out, the

My MicroMainframe Expanded Momory board arrived today. I was all set to bring it
home to set it up, but the EMS 4.0 driver wasn't included in the box. I called
the mail order outfit, who said that they would credit my a/c-no problem. Since
I had some things to figure out anyway, I called Turbo EMS publisher Lantana. I
told them I had a 286 express card with an 8k cache, and wondered how to set the
address if I was going to disable some of my motherboard memory the way Desqview
says is the best (gives me the biggest size other or second programs. They told
me that although they included a special driver for desqview, they thought you
needed EEMS to do that. They also told me that not very many expanded memory
boards will allow you to "backfill" from 256 or whatever k to 640k, which is
what desqview wants. I called Micro Mainframe, and they pretty much told me that
NOT all EMS 4.0 boards are the same, and that the Lantana folks are right! I
called the desqview folks who had told me that all I needed to maximize dview
performance was 1 meg of 4.0 expanded memory and to disable all but 256k on the
motherboard. They say that I should have known that not all boards are created
that way. I guess they are right. After calling every 800 number in PC and PCM
magazines, I'm pretty much convinced that no such board exists that will fit
into a Tandy 1000sx. So, after all is said and done, and all the questions, I
guess the MM EMS board will have to go back and I will have to give up (at least
until Shamrock, who bought some Zucker stuff, starts up manufacturing that is).
Also, am I the only one having a problem with Bandaid? I can't get any access to
my hd's FAT! Norton's Format recover in my autoexec.bat file, edlin, pc- write
all set it off. Anything that saves a file! What am I doing wrong? I called it
from autoexec. Edlin set it off reading my autoexec.bat so I could get bandaid
after FR. PC-Write was going to just start to name a new file.

Running DESQview in that enviroment can cause you to go insane. I tried it when
I had my 1000 and then again when I updated to an "AT". It works fairly well in
a 386 but it is too limited when used with the other processors. Multitasking
DOS programs can be a real bear. You have to remember they think they have the
whole machine to themselves. You may want to look at other programs that can
give you somewhat less bang. A good one that comes to mind is DoubleDos. If
your programs you want to run at the same time are small and will both fit in
about 500K, this may be the soultion. Check the database next week as I will
be uploading some programs that will allow you to run two or more programs at
once.

You need 41256 150ns chips to upgrade your machine. I am a little surprised that
you have a memory expansion board, yet only have 256K of memory? I can only
assume that you have an additional 128K of RAM on the memory board. If this is
the case then your memory board uses 4164 150ns chips. You need 16 41256 chips
(two rows of 8) and 16 4164 chips (two rows of 8) to get to 640K. Will your
memory board allow four rows of chips (32 total)?

As you already have the 4164 chips (16 more than you really need), you need only
purchase the 16 41256 chips. There are many places you can obtain these. If your
memory board will handle them, I will tell you where to get them.

Wish that I could help you with the initialization of the Tandy modem, using the
old Deskmate. I am afraid that I lost my original copy. The new DM allows you to
choose the type of modem.

     Cellular Phone Hookup

I've got this Uniden cellular phone with data interface (Uniden CP003) supplied
by Cellular One for demo'ing Delphi during the annual Wang trade show starting
tomorrow in Boston, and am trying to hook it up with a Hayes compatible modem
and a Wang PC running Wang vanilla telecommunications software. The modem can't
automatically dial the number through a cellular phone, so I dial it myself
manually, but... I can't figure out how to make the phone go from TALK to DATA.
There is a switch on the side of the data interface box, which is the tiny box
inserted in the middle of the line from the cellular handset and its
transceiver. But moving the switch from one position to the other (TEL and COM)
does NOTHING to quiet the squawking of the line over the modem, and consequently
the connection between my computer and Delphi is never made. (The twisted pair
cable runs from the data interface box to the back of the modem.)

Anyone have idea what might be wrong in this configuration? I hate to waste
this phone line and would really love to be able to demo Delphi to Wang
show-goers. Please reply here or call (617) 698-1454 if you have any ideas!

Ha ha ha - funny - I hope "she" calms down after you purchase the printer.

Seriously, you should not have a problem with the NEC and your TX. I ran
Okidata's, Star Gemini's, Epson's and Panasonic's printers with my T1000. Now,
the T1000 (original model) was even less IBM compatible than your TX. So, your
NEC should work just fine.

The T2000 was originally sold with a R.S. VM-1 monitor. I am not sure if this
has been kept in the R.S. monitor line (of products). You could call Computer
Plus (800-343-8124) and ask what they know about the T2000 monitor and cable
configuartion.

I do know that the standard output of the din plug is as follows:

1- no connection
2- Red
3- green
4- blue
5- ground
6- ground
7- Horizontal Sync/Composite Sync
8- Vertical Sync

Hope this helps.

I figured out the solution to my problem. It was simple, as it often seems to
be with telecommunications problems! My comm program just needed to tell the

cellular phone, the modem needs to think it has dialed the number. The
connection worked surprisingly well for the demos. Thanks!

I have a nec p5200, and have been happy with it. I bought the color option and
ribbon, and the kids and I have a lot of fun. If you buy the current issue of PC
Resources, it has a review of 5 color printers. The nec did pretty well. It does
ok on graphics. You have to know what colors you can get with the ribbon- they
definitely won't be what you see on screen.

Color has also juiced up my word processing. If any of your programs don't have
a driver for the nec, the Epson LQ 24 pin color driver that they ALL have will
work. If you have the color option installed, it is a snap to change the color
ribbon to a multistrike for great letter quality printing. My main gripe is the
black portion of the color ribbon, which is not dark enough for my tastes, but a
year ago, the nec was the only one out there(24 pin).

By the way, the tandy color printer is the best dot matrix printer for color
graphics, except the only programs that supprt them are usually specially
written for radio shack.

The programs I use the most are pc-write, inset (puts graphics in my word
processing-color too no matter what quicksoft says), and dpaint that ALL take
advantage of the nec either in epson mode or nec mode.

This printer has been through 6 months of shareware manuals and is still going
strong, so I highly recommend it

Have following installed in one of the first 1000 SX's off the line:
20 meg hard card, 286 express board, ems memory expansion board, memory+
serial port on the ems board -- all purchased from Tandy through Express order.
In addition there is a IEEE 488 interface board so we can talk to an HP plotter
with that interfac e. Everything works fine until I go to 286 mode. After a
varying amount of time the *&^)$# guy locks up. Occassionally an error message
will be on the screen, usually during idling on the menu screen (Precurser). If
anyone has any suggestions I'd like to hear them.
Two weeks at the Tandy shop got me a very upset secretary and a note that
said "ran diagnostics -- nothing wrong" and a $50 dollar charge. If you'd like
more info I'll list the interupts and and all other information for installed
boards. (Locks wit h 286 set with standard and ALT addresses)

By the way, the same hard card, 286 board and serial port work fine in my
original 1000 (not even A) at home.

As anyone who may have been programming with date codes can tell you, Sep 18,
1989 was the 32,000 and whatever day since Jan 1, 1900. If the program has d
the date as an integer, it bombs out. Dos says 1/1/00 is #1, 1/2/00 is #2, ect.
9/18/89 is greater
than an integer and the system locks. Could be that your problem is related.
Try signing on the dos date for sometime last summer. If it doesn't work -----

For the memory upgrade, try Computer Plus - 1-800-343-8124. Their prices are
excellent and they are very helpful.

For the hard drive, the 2 best companies are JB Technologies - 1-818-709-6400 or
Hard Drives International - 1-800-234-3475. Both have good prices and support.

As for size and card vs drive - The size depends on what you do with your
computer. If you find you need to use a number of large programs frequently, or
write programs fairly often, I would suggest 30 - 40 megs.

Card vs drive depends on how much you want to spend. The cards are more
expensive.

Also, when you order the drive, remember to tell them you have a Tandy and need
the Tandy configuration on the controller card.

I have a batch file to BACKUP new data automatically. The operative command is,
for example, BACKUP c:\wp50\*.fil a: /s/m/a. This creates a new file with the
extension .@01. Question: what commands can I put in the batch file to delete
theold .fil file and
rename the new file from .@01 to .fil? (Note: In any one session I may have
entered new data into more than one file with a .fil extension within the same
directory.) It seems there should be some way to use FIND to accomplish this.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve... One of the first things you should do, if you haven't already
done so, is to download PKZ101.EXE from the Utilities Topic of the database
in the PC Compatibles area. All files are kept over there. All the files in
our database and all other databases, are in compressed format to save space
and online $$$. PKZIP ( one of the files in PKZ101.EXE ), is the most widely
used of these compression methods. Any file you see with a .ZIP on the end
of it, needs this file to decompress it. Also, PKUNPAK is used on files with
an .ARC extension.

Jump right in and hollar when ya need help.

I put the drive in my 1000TX. It was a simple operation. Just install in a
slot (they recommend the one nearest the floppy drives) and set a switch (this
switch is detailed in the Practical Guide that came with my machine) and it is
S-DOS 3.2. Even if you have to format the drive, the instructions are clear.
USE THEIR INSTRUCTIONS! I followed Tandy's technique and could only get 20 meg.
I followed MegaHaus' and got the full 32meg. The entire process will make even
the most fearful feel like a computer genius. I work on a Mainframe (Honeywell)
and the felt no hesitation about setting up the Hardcard; However, the process
is so simple you should have no problem. Don't be afraid to jump in. Just take
your time and read the instructions and you will suprise yourself. As I stated

You can even run GW basic on the 1400, and load a basic program created on the

programming.

To get a field length of 255 and have the Basic program swallow it, use:

BASIC {program name} /S:255 /F:4

You do not need to load BASICA, simply GWBASIC.

Stopping a BASIC listing from scrolling has always been a problem (while "in"
BASIC). It is best to simply list the lines you want to look at or dump them
to your printer if they will not fit on your display.

Your download percentage using a 2400 bps modem should be around 80%, while your
upload will be around 65%. This all depends on how clean your local node is
(Telenet or Tymnet packet-switching) with regard to "line noise".

These percentages can be deceiving - is your actual "on-line" time that much
different when up/downloading?

You may find that you will get less errors using Relaxed Xmodem if your node is
noisy - increasing your percentage. While Xmodem is not quite as snappy as
Ymodem, the difference in resends may more than make up for this.

One more thing you might consider, if nothing helps in this situation - what is
the "real" CIS hourly rate compared to Delphi's <grin>?

Main problem with the field length is that the keyword listing says you can
change the maximum field length in the OPEN statement, but it doesn't work
Why doesn't the Tandy book tell you that you have to set the maximum
length before entering Basic?

For the CNTRL BREAK not working with the extendec keyboard --- it's not
stopping a listing that is the major problem. It's getting out of RUNning a

corrections.

register for say 1,2,3,ect.. and get an OK, then ask S1 what the setting is
(S1?) the response is 000. I've gone as far as forcing the dip switch on for
auto answer and still get nothing. If I'm not mistaken register S0 toggles the
auto answer mode, and S1 counts the ngs. Any insight would be appreciated.

The Tandy manual does tell you about the options you have when loading Basic. It

Before you start Basic, type BREAK ON. This may help you get out of your loops.

many lines. Also one must use the batch file after every session or you wind up

about upgrading to VGA as I all ready have a multiscan monitor, TX, or any that
have incompatabilities with Tandy. Thank for your time

Does any one out there have any knowledge or experiance with upgrading a Tandy
1000TX to VGA, I am currently running EGA on an Everx card and a Packard Bell
multiscan monitor and would like to upgrade but can't find anybody that will
guarantee their card to work in a Tandy computer. Any help would be y

The EMS-5150t EMS by Micor Mainframe is built for the Tandy computers. It now
comes with LIM 4.0. At least they sent me the upgrade for 39 dollars. The
address and phone number:120 Blue Ravine Road #2, Folsom CA 95630 phone 916 985

My up/down percentages are about the same. I would use relaxed Xmodem but I am
not getting errors. In regards to rates I live in an area with e to CIS so I
have no tymnet or telenet charges. So your rates are about the same to a little
higher on non prime time but MUCH higer on prime time. But not to worry DELPHI
is much easier to use.

After subscribing to CIS for 3 years I still have more trouble on it than after
only 1 week on Delphi.

Would someone please tell me how to set the Tandy Smart Watch? It ran fine
until I ran a program that was supposed to be run on an AT class machine; now
the year is 2010 and I can't change it. I bought it from a Radio Shack Computer
Center, but did not get any docs with it. Fortunately, the program,
SMWCLOCK.COM came with my 1000TX. Thanx!

     t1000a and a hard drive
     From: KAHICKEY To: ALL

Hi!
i am rather new to PC's in general and to Tandy 1k's specifically. A
friend has a Tandy 1000A he has had for a while but has put it to little
use because of small mem and no hard drive. We got an aftermarket mem
expansion going but are having a ton of trouble with the hard drive.
 Some details are:
                 T1000A upgraded to 640 K.
                 MSDOS ver. 3.3
                 WD 1002a-27 hd controller
                 Seagate ST277R hard disk.
I have checked the entire system out and can find no obvious problems
the system passes all test and diagnostic software I have. The problem
is , the hard drive won't respond to the system. The system seems to
access it and the disk activity light comes on, but the silly thing just
times out. I know the rive and controller are good because I put them in my
clone and they work fine. Is there something I am missing or is this a
compatibility issue? I really appreciate any help any one can give. Thanks
 in advance!!!

     80287 in a TX
     From: RS232 To: MISAL

Some time ago you suggested that one should buy the genuine Radio Shack 80287
co-processor package, which is very expensive. I just bought a 6 MHz 80287
instead because I knew that on 80286 machines, the co-processor always runs at
two-thirds the speed of the main processor. This is in fact true as shown by
the diagnostic program from MicroWay in Mass. And my co-processor works in all
applications except one and that is the WATFOR-77 Compiler. This compiler has
a diagnostic program that checks the 80287 and it fails, stating that the 80287
interrupts are not generated properly. Any thoughts?

The file is WD Hard Drive Controller Info. It's in the Utilities Topic
The Tandy 1000 line, early versions anyway, use interupt 5 instead of 2
or visa vera. You might have to make modifications to the disk controller
to make it work. There is a file in the Utilities topic of the database
explaining this. Do a search for WESTERN. Two maybe three files will
be displayed. Download the one about WD Products.

The TX, although using a 286 processor, only has 8 bus lines rather than 16. I
am guessing here (you asked for thoughts), but the compiler, seeing the 286 and
287 may be assuming the 16 bit addresses - which of course it cannot find.

It is the old story, Kevin - Tandy in its early wisdom switched the IBM standard
interrupts 2 and 5. You need a modifcation to the controller, which jumpers 2 to
5 and 5 to 2.

RE: Basic 3.20 (Re: Msg 15061)
     From: KCS_MILW To: RFREY

RFREY, I know about the frustration you are having with the Basic ctrl-break
keys. Before I bought my Tandy 1000TL 10 months ago I had never used an MS-DOS
machine before. After about 8 months of trying to figure out why ctrl-break
would not work and pushing the reset button to get out of these GOTO loops I
decided to try other key combinations. The answer turned out to be ctrl-Pause.
This key combination has never failed to break this loop. Why doesn't Tandy
mention this in the manual? Ctrl-Pause can be used to stop a program listing
too, or pause and spacebar used alternately to page through a listing. The above
tricks should allow everyone to enjoy programing in basic with the new
keyboards.

I did not read the fix for PLAY you mention in another message but I ran across
a problem with the PLAY command in DeskMate's music program. The manual says to
press ctrl-P to start music. This does not work but Alt-P does. Also if a
printer is hooked to the system it must be on or Alt-P won't work. CAUTION: do
not turn the printer on till the system is booted or the computer will lock up.
At least on my system it does.

Here is another thing the manual fails to mention. In DeskMate if you use the
Word processor, Spreadsheet or the Draw program you will eventually want to
copy, move, delete or print a part of the picture or file. The manual always
tells you to mark this section first in order to do the operation. The problem
is they don't tell how to mark. A mark is performed by first pressing the shift
key and then moving the arrow keys in the desired directions. This will hi-lite
the move, copy, delete or print area. Got this answer from the local Tandy
Service Center. They then asked me for my account number. Seems they don't
answer questions for free. Something like 5 answers for $100.00. In fairness I
must say I do like the computer though and the Tandy store where I bought it has
been very helpful in getting me the correct answers when I made several hardware
upgrades to my system.

When DOS asks for date and time, enter correct data. Then type SMWCLOCK C
<return>. Add the following to your autoexec.bat: SMWCLOCK S. Repeat every time
we switch to or from daylight saving time. This is all described in Tandy Cat.
No. 25-1033, which you should have received.

Kevin,
In addition you will need a ROM that is specific to Tandy, available from
Western Digital. This will replace an existing ROM on the controller.

  The Tandy VGA card I have in my 1000TL . . .

. . . says "Paradise" on it in several places. It is
made by Paradise for Tandy, but I know Greg Law, for one, has a board made by
Paradise in his 1000TX, so you might want to go with Paradise -- good brand.

Tandy have a few quirks, most of which can be ignored... in this case though,
here's what you'll have to do. There are 2 jumpers on the controller card... 2
and 5. Switch 2 to 5 and 5 to 2 and the drive should work fine.
