What kind of 1000? The 251-1 would be a waste in a 1000 unless it's a
TX or TL. The best you can expect from a normal 1000 is probably 65ms
in access speed. The 251-1 is a 28ms drive and must be used in an AT
type machine to take advantage of it. The controller issue can be dealt
with once we know what kind of 1000. Some require modifications and
special ROMs. If it's an SX or better, you can use a standard Western
Digital WX1 or GEN controller.

Is the black portion of your color ribbon awfully light? One thing I have found

As you have discovered - you need to use the PROMPT commmand to do so - this is

there something missing in the software, config, etc? Also, I have booted up w/

At Computer Plus (An R.S. mailorder outlet - very dependable and been in
business for many years) sells both the TX and TL with 640K of memory onboard.
If you hurry, you can purchase the TX for only $719.00 (sale ends 11-30-89),
from this outlet. The TL/2 is also on sale for $819.00 until 12-31-89.

I think your friends are speaking of the SX, which only comes with 384K of
memory.

Either machine is a good value - personally, for only $100 more, I would opt for
the TL/2.

Computer Plus

I have dealt with these people for 10 years and have never had a problem. "IF"
your machine ever needed repair - you could take it to your closest repair
center - the warranty is valid, because Computer Plus is an authorized R.S.

I almose forgot to add the device driver into your system do the following.

On a floppy system put this in your config.sys file:

DEVICE = KEYCNVRT.SYS

on a hard disk system place the driver in your root directory and do this:

DEVICE = KEYCNVRT.SYS.

If you have all system files in the same directory as the command files.

DEVICE = C:\DOS\KEYCNVRT.SYS (This assumes that the driver is in a sub-directory

Also the command ECHO ON must preceed the prompt command. Actually the command
ECHO OFF must NOT have been given.

If the color of the screen is to be changed then the following slightly
different prompt command must be given:

PROMPT $e[0;34;46m

That would give a blue foreground on a cyan background. Notice the "m" on the
end of the command.

Alternatively, the command can be given as follows:

" charactor is generated by holding down the ALT key while at the same time
entering 27 on the numeric keypad. Most word processors won't allow this. A text
editor must be used.

The advantage of NOT using the PROMPT command method is that you don't have to
worry about the ECHO OFF/ON command and the subsequent echoing of each PROMPT
command. It's not much but it's neater.

  Jim,

  I used to have a 1000TX . . .

                                         . . . and now I have a 1000TL. Unless
you get the TX a lot cheaper, I'd recommend the TL. I do not recall that the
TL is any less IBM compatible than the TX? I mean, it does have a few features
that the IBM does not have, so, in that sense, it is not as compatible, I
  suppose.

Personally, I really like the quick way the TL, and TL/2, boots up. Just turn
it on and a second later the DeskMate DeskTop appears. Now, I'll admit that I
have that "boot up to DeskMate" option disabled, but I do miss it. It is just
that I need to load a bunch of stuff on power up and I prefer to start at the
DOS prompt. But, for your kids, that almost-instant boot up is a very nice
  feature.

Do examine the keyboards! The TX has the older keyboard, while the TL and TL/2
have the new enhanced keyboard. My friend David was ready to buy a TL just to
get the better keyboard! But, he decided to go with the Northgate keyboard,
but if you get the TL/2, you won't need an option keyboard.

Also, I think the version of DeskMate sold with the TX is TWO versions old, so
if your kids will be using DeskMate, it'd be much wiser to get the machine
  with the newest DeskMate 3.3.

Now, if you really are referring to the SL as an option to the TL/2 rather
than the TX, then all of the above is moot. Still, I'd go TL/2, for the extra
speed of the 80286 CPU. The SL has only an 8088.

Be careful with the TL/2. The only forseeable problem is when you go to add on
a hard drive. At this point in time you are solely committed to a TANDY hard
drive since with the TL/2 the controller card is included in the machine. As of
this writing, the re are no 3rd party hardware for the hard drive. Tandy is
usually 30% more than the third party. Either way though you really can't beat
either machine for price, or peripherals.

One way to get around the prompt and/or echo command is to use the edlin' editor
that should have come with your DOS. The way to get the escape sequence is to
type in control-v and then [. It will look like this:
^V[ when you type it. Make sure that you do the double
brackets when you need to.

Here is a sample to reassign the F10 key to a corner graphics character:
                  ^V[[0;68;187p
^Z (ends the file/EOF marker Type this file (e.g., if you
named this chge.key, then on the command line you would enter "TYPE CHGE.KEY"

Don't forget to clear your reassignments before you use the F10 or other re-
assigned keys or you may get surprising results.

Hope this helps.

     ai languages
     From: PAULPETERSEN To: BJ85

Bob, I noted that you took exception to my statement that "better is easiest to
remember." In defense I offer these construct elements, a process construct of
easy, ie more - different - better, a desire to make everything about
computers easy - a chang e construct of transparent transformation that returns
the reverse, and to remember - a procedure construct that involves task
accomplishment toward completion. The elements - process, desire, and procedure
form a basis upon which cognition can be retaine d. Understanding that
recognizes two important concepts of ai language processing for the student.

the program, including all data sets, variables, and procedures is a rigid
construct that is shown to be a single continuous construct of defined parts
easily recognized by the processor. In learning, the rigidity of the program is
seemingly contradicted
by procedure modification. Recognizing the modification as just another
construct within the program however, returns the student to the origional
premise of programs being rigid constructs with a start, a middle and an end.
Replacement of existing stru ctures with external structures is not a part of
the premise because it belies the purpose of intention and is akin to
consultation. External structures, to be accessed, must be included in the
origional program and that brings the student back to the pre mise of a rigid
construct.

within the program, all operations return a subset of the program itself or
information about a subset. The 'return' concept is fundamental to ai
languages. It models all things as having inputs and producing outputs that
form the input for higher order
 constructs.

the requirement of rigid constructs is necessary so that returns can take place
in a timely manner. Easy recognition by the processor is the key to ai speeds
because a constantly changing construct requires constant re-cognition.
Recognition is complete
 when it is not extended.

                 better is easiest to remember

easy is a process of more - different - better

to remember is a procedure of recognition to completion.

In actualization, cognition is the motivation of precedence.

Reading back through the T2000 Forum messages, I find that you are not the only
one to encounter this problem. Although the problem has not been pinpointed, two
explanations are offered:

1> the controller ROM has been suspect (Tandy controller)

2> the vibration caused by a poor installation can have adverse affect (see (
message # 14484)

Let us know what type/brand controller you are using. This will decide what
configuration you need for the second hard drive.

First Rich, transferring data from the GD to the Color Computer drive is not
really what you want to do (at least I can't see a reason why). The drive format
is not compatible, even from an IBM compatible 5.25 drive.

If you want to transfer "data files" between the DG and the Coco, this is
possible. However, you must have software on both mahcines that can access the
data. This means that the data must be in ASCII (pure text) format. Text files
with control codes (word processing tabs, hard carriage returns...) and binary
files are not compatible, between the two systems.

Transferring IBM compatible programs between 3.5 and 5.25 drives is easy, as
long as they are not copy protected programs; and the drives are also IBM
compatible.

Give me a little more information and we will be glad to help.

Running on a basic 1000 ( not even the A model ) with the PC technologies 286
board. No problem at all. The only thing you may run up against is accessing
a smartwatch if you have one installed. To access the smartwatch for setting the
system date at boot up, you have to switch (with a "pct 88" command ) to the old
chip which you've installed on the accelerator board, then switch back to 286
mode with "pct 286". In order to be able to use these c ommands you must
include the correct parameters in your config.sys file. Best to include the
lines in your autoexec.bat file. There are some games which will not work
right with the 286 running. Just turn it off with the same command and then
back on. Helps if you right yourself a print to screen text listing that ends
up l ooking like a menu with batch files running off the number list.

Also have the same board installed in a 1000SX at work. There are major
problems with lockups --- I'm assuming because I also have a Micro Mainframe EMS
board installed. Tandy service and the manufacturers all say that nothing is
wrong. I don't believe them.

Take a look a PICEM19 GRAPHICS VIEWER in the Home & Games Topic. This may be of
some help.

for sure you'd have to have a program listing and be able to change it. the
program must account for what happens when any key is pressed, ie it will
recognize some but not the rest. what you're asking could turn out to be a big
task, but if the prog is written in Basic it may not be too difficult. regards,
pete

     Clock speed
     From: METFAN To: ALL

I have a Tandy 1000A and am becoming frustrated with its slow speed. I
understand that there is an accelerator board available to bring it up to the
speed of a 286, however my three expansion slots are used up by my modem, hard
drive, and memory expansion board. Does anybody have any ideas of what I can do
to solve this. Jon

     From: FORESTER To: ALL

The Tandy 1000 TL and TL2 seems to have a keyboard problem. When running an
interpreted Basic program the up arrow and the 8 key on the numeric keypad often
quit working until you leave the program. Does anyone know of a cause or a fix
for this?

Thanks for any help. Duane Bristow

You could get a memory card with a serial port on it like some of the AST
products. Hook an external modem to it. That would free up a slot for the
286 card. You might also look into the possibility of a 286 motherboard
that fits that machine. They can be had rather cheaply these days.

Floppy? Do you have a hard disk or only a floppy machine? I tried the pct.exe
file in my autoexec file and still had problems. Will chagne all dips and
addresses back to their originals and try again. Thanks. P.S. Are all your
motherboard dips in their original condition ( all off ) or have you change some
of them (they're interupt settings)? RFrey

I've got the orignial 1000. The only option I know of is to get the PC
Technologies 286 board from Tandy with the extra daughter board for the 1000.
The company is supposidly out of business but Tandy is said to still have some
boards in stock. You'll h ave to get a memory plus serial port to stick on the
memory upgrade board and an external modem. Unless you can find some other
boards in PCM magazine ads, I know of no other way to get a hard card, memory to
640k and 286 speed in the old 1000's. Sorr y!

Reggie, I haven't tried the Cache program. Too many of my progs use ALL of my
available memory and therefore cannot afford the luxury of TSR's, Cache progs,
etc. If the old version worked, I'm sure you should not have any trouble with
the new version.

Dennis, that makes me feel better! Still a little wary every time I hear the
rat-tat-tat of the drive (especially on power-up). The response you got from
MegaHaus makes me feel better regarding the company I purchased from! I had
heard of others getting such quick turnaround, almost did not think it was
possible! Have you looked into PCTools or similar product yet?

Thanks for your info. For the amount of money it would cost me to do all of
that I just might buy the new 1000tl which has the 286 processor and I can use
my existing modem, hard car and monitor. It might just be my answer.

All my motherboard switches are in the default states. I have a 30 meg
Seagate ST-238R drive. I don't use any of the drivers, EMS or 286 in my
config.sys. All I have is PCT 286 in my autoexec.bat. I load PCT 286 as
the last command in the autoexec.

I have a Tandy 1000A running at almost 9 MHZ (9.54 MHZ, 1 wait state). I am
using the PC-Sprint board. It does not take up a slot and only cost me around
$100. I have found very little problems (except some of the Tandy specific
games like LodeRunner and Football have graphics messed up) with it. I am
running a 40 meg Miniscribe drive with 2 floppies and 640k and a fax/modem and a
scanner on it. I believe they still advertise in PCM.

I have a Tandy 1000TX and have been reading alot lately on the new Doss 4.0 and
up. If I was to purchase the new Doss would I have to change any programs that
I am now running, such as Word5, ProComm+, data bases and etc. Also, how
difficult would it be to install the new Doss 4.0. I am currently running with
two floppy drives (3 1/2) and a 20 Mg Hard Card. Thanks for the assist and info.
