 Great idea! How?

Unfortunately, local repair service told me Conner (now Seagate)
made the machine. Seagate said impossible. Does the uncoded FCC
or other number give this info?

Conner/Seagate probably made the HD, but not the computer. You
might look inside and see whether any labels provide clues to the
manufacturer.

Exactly right! Good idea, perhaps the main board contains some
labels that I overlooked during my first exploring session.

VEN-TEL is the name on the internal modem. Never heard of them.
Someone posted that the FCC number has info on the manufacturer?

Tandy _did_ sell me a _copy_ of the multi page skematic of this
old dog.

Thanks for your help, Happy New Year,

 Bill

That sounds like progress. There were also third party suppliers
of internal modems; some advertised in PCM magazine, but should
also be found elsewhere.  We've been snowed in for a few days;
hope we can get out by the New Year. Now I see why 4-wheel
drives are popular here. Have a great New Year.

Thanks for the lead Horace, I was totally unaware of this mag,
but the library has copies from 93 thru 94. Lots of dated, but
Tandy specific info. As late as 93 Tandy marketed a 386 class
notebook.

The 286 machine I have uses the same memory SIMMs as Panasonic
X70 series. Talks like a duck!

Am I correct that 286 architecture cannot support modem speeds
above 9600 because of existing prehistoric UART? Any
workarounds?

Thanks again for the info, old timer <G>, Bill.

Support for greater than 9600 bps depends on the UART on the
serial board (or in the internal modem if one is used). A 16550
UART is needed for over 9600 bps. It is unlikely that a '286
computer had a 16550, but not impossible. A serial board with a
16550 could be added. An internal modem designed for higher bps
will include a 16550 or equivalent.

Is the above description the way it works for a 286 laptop
machine too? Thanks for your help, Horace. Bill

Although I have no specific information on '286 laptops, my
message described the required UART features needed for operation
faster than 9600 bps, so it should also apply. I think it's
unlikely that a '286 laptop would have a 16550 UART or
equivalent, based on the time frame of manufacture. You might
find an internal modem that will work in the laptop at high bps,
but it's probably a long shot.

Bill,

That's a Panasonic CF-270 or similar. (My memory is fading
these days).

I had the 2810 (and a 3830) and both were Panasonic machines.

You'll probably get dropped characters with the Ven-tel 2400
baud modem. Yep, this all sounds familiar. An external modem
will also probably drop characters at 9600 and faster speeds.

However, the 2810 is still running just fine with a friend that
I sold it to and all he does is write manuscripts with it!

Hi Andy!

Thanks for the reply. How did you like the 3830? What were the
features of it above the 2810 [fax / modem?]? What happened to
it?

To date I have not noticed any dropped characters when using the
VenTel 2400 modem.

I was quite satisfied to use the stock 2810 as a dedicated
aviation navigation tool, using FlightSoft Pro. Only while
experimenting one day did I realize Windows 3.1 was capable on a
286 machine. Since then I added a 540 HD and have been
investigating using vehicle power to replace the 12V, 1.4AH
computer battery [$82 from Batteries Plus, the lowest cost local
provider,offends my sense of value].

Is your use of [MCO] to designate you hail from Orlando? I'm
currently living in St Louis [STL].

Thanks again, Bill

Hello.

The FCC has a BBS (301-725-1072) which, among other things, will tell
you who manfactured a FCC ID's item if you supply the FCC ID.

Happy hunting!

Cordially,
Richard Kanarek

Richard,
The actual mfg for the 2810 was the Panasonic corp. I am a
user of on also. I've been using it for 3years now with no
trouble what so ever. I am running windows 3.1, compuserve 2.5,
works,Quicken, and several other things, so if you have any
questions, let me know, I've upgraded mine as musc as
possible...
Rob
