Jeez, please forgive this message--it's way out of place, but I
didn't kno where else to post it.

I bought a telephone at Radio Shack a long time ago, and have
good service from it. My first computer, Tandy 1000EX, was a
good entry-level machine, and I wrote the first four or five of
my science fiction novels on it.

Anyway, I've completely forgotten how to enter phone numbers into
memory or speed-dial them; I've looked all over for the booklet
that came with the

Underneath, it's marked "model number"43-588" (at least I think
so; the digits are tiny, and I'm even wearing bifocals!) After
the Radio Shack tm there's ET-283. I don't suppose I need to
give you the FCC registration number, here are two more numbers
in large alphanumerics: A 4 A and TO-or-01917895CT.

Just would like to use the speed-dial again. And, btw, the
previous phone was a Radio Shack with no wall or desk mount--it
hung up when you put if flat on the desk. Saved a lot of room,
but I haven't seen that one in a long time. Any hope of its
returning?

Very truly yours,

George Alec Effinger "A Tradition in Science Fiction Since 1970"

Out of place? Au contraire - where else would you find people who had
learned (painfully) the ins and outs of Tandy (there's also more than a few
fen here).

If you want the original booklet for the ET-283, you can order it from
Tandy National Parts, (800) 442-2425. Give them the catalog number of the
phone (43-588) and ask for the Users Manual (its part# MU4300588 if you're
interested). Natl Parts is possibly the best run division in Radio Shack
(damning with faint praise <g>).

If you have a Fax machine, use Tandy FaxBack. Call (800) 323-6586 and
follow the voice prompts (answer "1" to the first two prompts, enter the
document number(s), and give the number for your fax machine when asked).
The user instructions (all of one page) for the ET-283 are document nbr
7157. A description of Tandy FaxBack is available here in Lib 1 as FAXBAK.TXT.

    From that fax sheet -

To store a number in memory:
1. Lift the handset.
2. Press STORE.
3. Enter the telephone number you want to store.
Note: A pause entry counts as 1 digit.
4. Press MEMORY once.
5. Enter the 2-digit number (01-20) for the location where you want to
    store the number.
6. Repeat steps 3-5 to store additional numbers. Return the handset to
the cradle when you finish storing numbers.

To dial a number in memory:
1. Lift the handset.
2. Press MEMORY.
3. Enter the two-digit location for the number you want to call.

(hmmm, looking at this post, you'd think _I_ was getting paid by the word.)

George, I think that if you call Tandy at "1-800-THE-SHAC" or
"1-800-843-7422" and follow the questions, eventually you will
get to talk to a tandy rep or even to order a new manual for the
phone. Also there is a Tandy Fax-back service which works quite
well at 1-800-323-6586 by which you can get most info for any
Tandy Product.
